Tiivistelmä:Segmented labour market (SLM) theories have argued that earnings are closely tied to worker's productivity in the primary sector of the labour market, but not in the secondary sector. Theory is tested along occupational segmentation; it is investigated which market segment exhibits unexplained earnings differentials, occupational mobility barriers and other characteristics. Occupations are partitioned in the primary and secondary sector occupations. Empirical findings on earnings are presented, regression results are analysed by gender and race. Occupational barriers are considered and probability of moving from the secondary sector to the primary sector is calculated. Theoretical hypothesis cannot be rejected.
