Tiivistelmä:The study of competition between banks and building societies has shown that major changes occurred within the channels of distribution for all forms of financial services. Traditional boundaries between banks, building societies, estate agents, insurance companies, stockbrokers and retailers are breaking down; more complex and aggressive channel structures are the result. Rapid shift from specialization to diversification has led to some problems of positioning and to a blurring of images. It is reported that there is also a tendency for diversification on the basis of competitive reaction and/or short-term profit projections, rather than being founded upon a thorough understanding of customer needs, motives and attitudes.
