| Tiivistelmä: | In recent years there has been a substantial increase in the number of mergers and takeovers. In the UK, the competition authorities have recently stepped up their attack on mergers considered to have serious anti-competitive effects. Thus, in terms of its impact on market structures in the UK, competition policy has had only a marginal impact and UK market concentration levels in general have shown a marked increase. UK merger policy is surveyed alongside a concurrent development - the introduction in 1990 of a new supranational Merger Regulation by the European Community. The application of policy control by reference to selected merger cases is highlighted. |
