| Tiivistelmä: | Lotman sees three phases in cultural development. In the first man differentiates himself from animals through the feeling of shame. In the second social groups regulate their mutual relationship through explicit rules (fear). In the third intra-group behaviour (nobility, peasantry) is again subject to shame. |
