All gassed up with no place to go - that's the way the U.S. auto industry looks today. Despite having cut costs, boosted productivity and quality, and withstood challenges from Japanese competitors, the car biz sat idling on the on-ramp as the long economic recovery that began in the spring of 1991 passed it by. Unit sales of cars and trucks have fallen. Profits have been substandard and won't offer much cushion should the next downturn be severe. |
