| Tiivistelmä: | This article studies the policies for operating a network of plants located in different countries and subject to production cost uncertainties due to variations in economic and political factors such as exchange rates, inflation and taxes. The article considers how a firm can utilize excess capacity to hwdge against variations in factors that are beyond the firm's control. For making facility location and capacity decisions for firms competing in global markets, characterization of the optimal operating policy is an important step. The bulk of the analysis is for a firm with two plants in two countries. The simpler case is developed first and then the results are extended to multinational multimarket environments, since its easier to understand the structure of the policy for a two-country problem and there is no loss in generality. |
