Tiivistelmä:It is now well understood that the population structure of nearly all developed economies will undergo dramatic changes over the next 30-40 years. The combined impact of declining fertility rates and increased life expectancy means that the proportion of the population aged over 65 will rise sharply in the next few decades. Chart 1 shows United Nations projections of the demographic structure of the UK to the year 2050; Chart 2 shows projections of the structure of the population in Western Europe as a whole. The charts show that there is likely to be a steady decline in the proportion of the population under 30 and a substantial increase in the proportion of the population in their second half of their working lives.
