Tiivistelmä:The meaning of "Japanization" is clarified in the British economic context. Three variants are distinguished as follows: the direct, the mediated and the permeated (or full). A comparison of Japanese and British economic systems and structures makes clear several key differences. The UK has traditionally adopted laissez faire policies quite unlike the "dirigiste" economic system of Japan. There are many large multinational corporations in the UK, but there is nothing that is remotely similar to the Zaibatsus and Kigyoshudan. One of the key differences is the lack of integration between banking, other financial institutions and manufacturing firms. British firms are often thinking about their own practices incorrectly.
