Tiivistelmä:Some questions are raised about the extent to which the objective of Human Resource Management, to manage organizational culture, is actually feasible. On the basis of an in-depth case study analysis arguments are presented that the dominant values of society at large are implicated in what appears to be the spontaneous formation and character of occupational culture. The work of slaughtering teams and slaughter men is examined. The phenomena of worker self-management are described and analyzed. Some aspects of work and leisure behaviour are discussed in detail. The conclusion is drawn that unless and until workplace cultures are more adequately understood, HRM will merely foster the illusion of managerial control.
