Tiivistelmä:Marginal performers have the ability to be high performers, but they are stifled by poor management. Managers can turn around these employees by fostering three critical factors - ability, support, and effort - in the workplace. A manager's ability to address these performance factors is in part determined by how well he or she handles day-to-day dialogues with employees. By attributing performance problems to inappropriate causes, managers create self-defeating dialogues and rely on management strategies that all too easily take on punitive tone. A more positive approach can be developed if managers accept at least partial responsibility for the performance problem and apply the reinforcement principles of current motivation theory.
