Tiivistelmä:Turkmenistan gained its independence from the former Soviet Union on October 27, 1991, after sixty-seven years of Soviet rule. It inherited many natural resources from the Former Soviet Union (FSU) such as petroleum and natural gas. Today, as much as 80 percent of its territory contains oil and gas. About 60 percent of Central Asia's petroleum is located in Turkmenistan, which has only 9 percent of the region's population - about five million people, second only to Kazakhstan.
