| Tiivistelmä: | Stafford Beer's VSM (viable system model) can make a contribution to understanding of the management task and improving managerial practice. An appreciation of the VSM cannot be attained solely in terms of its own cybernetic assumptions. Some guidelines are set out against which the managerial significance of the VSM can be measured. A description of the model follows as well as a supportive analysis of the viable system "viewpoint" on what makes for successful management. There are however some "blindspots" in the viable system viewpoint. Criticism of VSM is used to discover important aspects of the management task. |
