Tiivistelmä:With the completion of the Internal Market by the Single Act the creation of a European citizenship by Art. 8 of the Maastricht Treaty, and the forthcoming introduction of the Euro, cross-border consumer shopping should become a commonplace and a right of its own. One of the most serious obstacles to true cross-border activities lies in the socio-legal differences still existing among member states. This paper is concerned with the working and functioning of the present system from the perspective of the consumer. The paper looks at the position of the consumer / private citizen and describes the applicable jurisdiction and conflict rules very briefly, with special insistence on existing deficiencies as they have been shown in socio-legal research.
