Tiivistelmä:The role of the chief executive officer (CEO) is characterized. America's competitive problems are examined in the light of four famous publications of the early 1980s. Eight basic business activities affecting mostly American competitive standing are described: customer relations, financial planning, labor relations, market analysis, new product development, personnel management, production and manufacturing, research and development. In a research study a questionnaire had been sent to the CEOs of the 1,000 largest industrial firms as listed in Fortune magazine to get information on the views regarding these eight activities. Apparent discrepancies were found between what American firms need to do and what their CEOs do.
