Tiivistelmä:According to the theory of George Steiner, the new CEO must be a person with skills to deal more logistically and more politically than previous CEOs, who were expected to pay more attention to the traditional economic and technical affairs of the firm. This hypothesis was investigated in a study by mailing questionnaires to 200 CEOs. The results of this study and some propositions of microeconomic theory regarding the new CEO are summarized. Economic theory has begun to integrate the external environment of business into the theory of the firm. Therefore it becomes possible to explain why CEOs allocate significant time and effort to external factors. In the future public policy and regulatory issues will assume even greater importance for CEOs.
