Tiivistelmä:The activity that the CEO can cut out because it is discretionary, is that cutting edge of research that brings new development. Senior managers are tempted to reduce research effort because new cutting-edge technology is probably not going to affect the company during their careers. There are new techniques such as teamwork that improve the productivity of the research activity, but that cost more money. Moreover, CEOs believe that research people don't like to stop doing any project, even after many failures. In view of the difficulties mentioned some suggestions are made, e.g. that R&D executives should be champions of change and convince the senior management about the necessity of research work.
