Tiivistelmä:The paper addresses the question: how would agricultural trade liberalization by one or more groups of countries affect the natural environment, and hence economic welfare, broadly defined to include not just the consumption of marketed goods and services but also the utility which society derives from the environment? The analysis suggests that a liberalization of agricultural policies would involve a change in incentive structures that not only raised income substantially in rich and poor countries but was also likely to reduce both the damage inflicted on the global environment and the chemical residues in the food produced by the farmers.
