Tiivistelmä: | A model derived from the relational view of strategy is introduced to examine 1. the impact of track record and financial resources (hereafter as: fin-res.) on the commercial success and artistic recognition of cinema projects, and 2. the relationship btw. the commercial and artistic (here as: comm-and-artc.) dimensions of film performance. Structural equation modeling performed on more than 2,000 feature films released in the North-American theatrical market btw. 1988 and 1997 illustrates the mediating role of fin-res. as catalysts of comm-and-artc. track record resources. In addition, a novel hierarchy of lead actors, directors, and producers in the explanation of film performance is also found. The precedence of commercial success in the USA, and the symbolic and institutional status of U.S. cinema as being primarily an industry is revealed. |
