Tiivistelmä:This article analyzes to which extent customer interaction during the innovation process can promote innovation perfor- mance. While previous research has sometimes postulated such an effect conclusive results are still missing. Based on a study of more than 300 innovation projects in the machinery industry the authors find that performance impacts of custo- mer interaction depend significantly on the time when the customer is involved in the project. Specifically, invol- vement of customers in early and late stages of the innova- tion process has the strongest impact on innovation perfor- mance. Performance impacts of customer interactions also de- pend on the type of the customer involved. An analysis of the present state of customer interaction in innovation pro- cesses in practice reveals significant deficits. The fin- dings can contribute to enchancing innovation performance.
