Tiivistelmä:Money as a motivator remains the basic assumption behind appraisal and merit pay schemes. However, most company merit schemes motivate only the minority, and effectively turn off the majority. Only the top 20% or so get the best increases. Many managers perform the appraisal process inadequately and often give more than deserved awards to avoid confrontation. The focus is on how best the extra money can produce the extra motivation it is actually designed to achieve. Propositions: use lump sums, keep it simple, avoid discrimination, give power to managers.
