| Tiivistelmä: | The paper examines the role which renewables could play in cutting CO2 emissions and considers how the barriers to their development might be overcome. Policies towards these technologies in two countries, the UK and Denmark, are assessed, particularly in the light of increasing environmental concern. It is found that the role of renewables in global commercial energy balances falls well short of what is possible and, if environmental problems such as greenhouse are to be tackled, what is necessary. The economic viability of these technologies is improving steadily, and it is only strengthened if environmental considerations are taken into account. |
