Tiivistelmä:Based on confidential microdata from the U.S. Census Bureau, this study examines the performance of female-owned businesses (hereafter as: bus-s.), making comparisons to male-owned bus-s. Using regression estimates and a decomposition technique, explored is the role that human capital (as: HC), particularly through prior work experience (here as: p-w-e.), and financial capital play in contributing to why female-owned bus-s. have lower survival rates, profits, employment, and sales. Female-owned bus-s. are found to be less successful than male-owned bus-s. because they have less startup capital, less business HC acquired through p-w-e. in a similar business, and less p-w-e. in a family business.
