Tiivistelmä:Entry is typically viewed as a threat by the incumbent companies, however, this article takes another perspective. The authors examine the impacts of competitive and agglomeration effects of entry, investigating whether entry could actually provide an opportunity for the incumbents. A sample of Texas hotels is studied and it is found that when the entrant's agglomeration effects are likely to outweigh their competitive effects, the incumbent sets its prices higher. The effect is stronger for incumbents with prior experience of entries. Further, the authors demonstrate that the experience of the incumbent firm has a significant role in the recognition of situations that are likely to create agglomeration externalities.
