On Jan. 12, a group of hunters led by Russian Prime Minister Viktor S.Chernomyrdin arrived in a snowy glade 150 kilometers northeast of Moscow. As local guides jabbed poles into a den of hibernating bears, a mother and her two cubs stumbled out, only to fall in a hail of shots from Chernomyrdin's rifle. The incident prompted outrage among Muscovites, who flooded newspapers and radio talk shows with denunciations of the prime minister's cruelty. But Chernomyrdin didn't seem to understand that he had done anything amiss in slaughtering the sleepy bears. |
