| Tiivistelmä: | Five years after Russia embarked upon its transition to the market in January 1992, its economy was still in decline. The year 1996 had been predicted by many as the first year of growth. In 1995 the OECD predicted that "some upturn in GDP appears to have begun in the first half of 1995 and may accelerate to annual rates up to 10% in 1996". As late as April 1996 the EBRD predicted 3% growth for that year. However, official data now report a decline of 6% in Russian GDP in 1996. |
