| Tiivistelmä: | For Western managers to confidently engage in business and make investments, Russian companies must increase their credibility by substantially overhauling their business practices. The lack of attention to corporate gov ernance in Russia during the past decade of the country's transition to a market economy led to flagrant abuses of shareholder rights, and was a major reason why foreign investment came to a virtual halt. This article discusses these abuses, and then focuses on the progress the country is making toward better corporate governance. The authors have assigned scores based on developments for each of the eight principles prepared by the World Economic Forum as international benchmarks for effective corporate governance. |
