Tiivistelmä:Post-communist Russia is an ideal place for observing the coflict between order and freedom. As symbols of these values, Hobbes and Locke can be readily applied to the Russian experience. It is argued in the article that it is Hobbes, with his materialism, his cynical view of human nature and his understanding of the role of scarcity, who had a better understanding of the importance of the state. Simply put, a society can survive without freedom but will perish without a state.
