| Tiivistelmä: | Measures of the international competitiveness of a country relative to other countries are examined. The role of a theory in this field of study is discussed. The most popular approach is that which focuses on the detrimental effects of growth - measured in relative unit labor costs - on market shares and growth. Its underlying assumptions are discussed. A new approach is developed recently based on technological competitiveness taking into account both costs and capacity. The interrelationship between market shares for exports and imports and economic growth are investigated in a model framework. The influence of economic growth on technological competitiveness through demand-induced innovation is analyzed. |
