Tiivistelmä: | This article deals with the determinants of job satisfaction in 27 European countries at both i. the individual (herein as: ind.) level (e.g. type of occupation, working hours, supervision responsibilities etc.) and ii. the country (here as: cntr.) level (e.g. wage levels, levels of unemployment and inequality, extent of unionization). The i. ind. level factors explain a large share of cntr. level variation which renders country differences in job satisfaction foremost the result of ind. level factors and the composition of the workforce. Yet, some countries have higher job satisfaction (country premium) while others have less job satisfaction (country penalty) once ind.-level explanations are ruled in. In order to explain this, the effects of ii. cntr.-level factors are considered. Among them, wage levels appear to be the most important. |
