Tiivistelmä:The long-lived "New Statesman" magazine has enjoyed moments of great glory in its career. But it failed to change with the times. The major shareholders of the holding company SNCP (The Statesman and Nation Publishing Company) are a trust company. The principal asset in SNPC is the surplus in the staff pension fund. In order to save the paper, either costs must be slashed or revenie hiked. Tension and suspicion between management and editorial staff grew, leading to inertia at board meetings. The board was paralysed by indecision and an inability to move. In 1988 "New Statesman" and "New Society" merged. However, there are still complaints emerging from unfulfilled promises of larger sales and of sloppy accounting.
