Tiivistelmä:"White collar" university graduates, which account for 65 p.c. of total annual flows in Japan (and 85 p.c. in the case of young men) make up a strategic category for companies. Their careers might be analyzed in terms of a model based on two contrasting types of promotion ("fast track" and "slow track") that could correspond to two categories of engineers and managers, generalists and specialists. In the West, the former (who constitute the elite) are promoted more rapidly than the latter, while in large Japanese companies promotion is generally slow. This slow promotion enabled them to develop a system of on-the-job training through which graduates acquire broadly-based skills.
