Tiivistelmä:The study examines the short-run impacts of the September 11 attacks in New York on consumer choice and tourism decisions for competing destinations in the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands. The study was made comparing two different samples taken at different points in time in relation to terrorist attacks. The model used is a stated preference model. The findings reveal that major terrorist shocks are likely to affect both the decision to travel and one’s preferences for the attributes of the tourism product. Also the terrorist attacks caused a significant decrease in tourists’ utility for those deciding upon travel plans for a set of Mediterranean destinations and the Canary Islands. In addition it was found two results: while some destinations experienced a strongly negative impact on their image and attractiveness, others were upgraded as a consequence of terror events.
