Tiivistelmä:The consequences of allowing transshipments among locations are examined. Transshipments are allowed as actions after demands are realized but before they must be satisfied. The savings in holding and shortage costs are weighed against the cost of transshipments. The optimal ordering policy is a base stick policy. The policy returns each outlet to order-up-to level each period. These levels can be computed exactly only for special cases, i.e. only two outlets or equal costs across the outlets. Therefore a heuristic solution employing integration is developed for more general cases. Finally, the contribution of the model can be gauged by comparing the heuristic solution to an easily calculable alternative.
