Tiivistelmä: | Postponement of different assembly stages until an order comes in can cut product costs. Postponement is the delay in finalizing the configuration of a product until a customer order is received. Postponement represents a major strategic alternative to sales forecast-based distribution systems. By applying this method firms effectively avoid the risk of shipping products to the wrong location and of maintaining inventories that are not attuned to local customer needs. Four types of postponement are distinguished. They correspond to delays in four different stages in the production process: labeling, packaging, assembly, and manufacturing. |
