Tiivistelmä:Based on several research fields, such as economics, sociology and management (hereafter as: mgmt.) sciences, a new concept, that is, intellectual capital (here as: int-cap.), emerged in the early 1990s. Focus of interest being especially on Finnish companies, the author's dissertation's objective was to understand why companies do not apply models commonly known in the int-cap. literature. There were four research questions: 1. Are int-cap. and its mgmt. not important for companies? ; 2. Are models commonly known in the literature not applicable in practice? ; 3. Can int-cap. mgmt. be applied in practice through typical general mgmt. approaches? And if so, how? ; 4. What factors affect the choice of whether to apply a model commonly known to support int-cap. mgmt. or not? To conclude, it is uncertain whether int-cap. mgmt. (or models) ever will be widely accepted among practitioners. Most likely int-cap. mgmt. will never become a classic like the use of mgmt. information systems (MIS) or diversification. - This article is mainly based on Lectio Precursoria presented at Tampere University Technology, Finland (29.8.2008).
