Tiivistelmä:It is proposed in this study that international joint ventures (IJVs) are terminated either when the initial purposes of the formation of the IJV have been achieved (intended termination, here as: ind-trm.), or when emerging unanticipated contingencies impede the continuation of IJV*s operation (unintended termination, here as: und-trm.). The study examines the factors affecting ind-trm. and und-trm. and the longevity of IJVs. Among others, it is shown that appr. 90 percent of all IJV terminations are und-trm. and 10 percent ind-trm., and that the frequency of ind-trm. and und-trm. varies noticeably depending on the initial purposes of formation. This suggests that the termination of IJVs is significantly contingent on their formation etc.
