| Tiivistelmä: | GT exploits similarities in product design. Cellular manufacturing groups parts and machines into production cells according to processing similarities. Algorithms, that operate directly from the part/machine matrix, require one machine to be assigned to each cell as a starting point for the operations: the seed machines, the choice for which can have a great impact on the solution of cell formation heuristics. This study compares several seed selection rules. An alternative cell formation approach is described. Computational results show that this approach can often yield optimal solutions. |
