Tiivistelmä:This paper argues that labels and categories are utilized by individuals in organizational settings to help structure and simplify the social environment for reasons of consensus, control and understanding. People are sorted into categories and are perceived and treated as prototypes of their category. The labels attached to categories coalesce when individuals triangulate their perceptions of category members with the perceptions that powerholders and peers have of category members. The paper illustrates the ubiquity and potency of labeling processes with applications to organization-level, group-level and individual-level.
