Tiivistelmä:The article gives an overview of the UK economy and shows how squeezes on consumers may push them away from consumption and towards savings. During the economic downturn, the UK economy has emerged as one of the relative success stories - slowing less abruptly than most. Despite this relatively impressive performance we have spent the past 9-12 months questioning its medium-term sustainability. Overall, the outlook for the UK economy is characterised by three key features: a worsening trade-off between inflation and GDP growth; more volatile inflation; and, widening government deficits. Each feature is a reversal of what we had come to expect during the late 1990s.
