Tiivistelmä:The present article aims to re-evaluate the gravity of the financial problems facing voluntary hospitals in the interwar period. Like earlier hospital histories, its main sources of quantitative data are the statistics published annually from 1891 in Burden's hospitals and charities, and its successors, the Annual report on the voluntary hospitals produced in the 1920s by the Order of St John, then from 1931, the Hospitals Yearbook. However, previous historians have been constrained by these records in three respects. First, the limited number of geographical categories in which the aggregate statistics are ordered prohibits an analysis which differentiates the experience of hospitals according to type, size, and location.
