| Tiivistelmä: | Recently several authors have directed attention to the importance of capacity utilization as an explanation for technical scale economies in the production of electricity. Firing-unit data for electric-generating companies are analyzed to determine the relationship between capacity utilization and scale economies. It is shown that capacity utilization rates are functions of relative fuel prices and the mix of technology available to the company. This suggests that the results of capacity-utilization studies will be dependent on the relative fuel prices in the years from which the data come, even if the capital stock is exactly the same. |
