| Tiivistelmä: | The labour force participation rates of older men and women is investigated around the world on the basis of data covering 151 countries. It is analyzed how these rates are related to a number of economic, demographic and policy variables. It is found that the well-known decline in participation rates of older persons that accompanies economic development can be traced, to a large extent, to increasing income levels and structural changes in employment associated with increasing urbanization and non-farm activity. Also important in reducing participation rates of older persons are social security programmes and (for older men only) the ratio of older persons to persons of standard working age. |
SCIMA
