| Tiivistelmä: | The effectiveness of research and development depends on good management as well as scientific ability. Few people in R&D get any real training in this area, and those that do say that they would have benefited from having it earlier rather than later in their career. They are therefore, forced to learn from experience, but it would appear that this is not always the most appropriate way. A better approach is to make use of formal management development programs at appropriate points in a scientist's career. Such programs should have a significant experimental content and focus on interpersonal skills and teamwork. |
