| Tiivistelmä: | Social resource and opportunity costs of science are explored utilizing a model integrating the distribution of scientific talent, the individual scientist's contribution to fundamental scientific knowledge as a function of his scientific talent, aggregate scientific value of scientific contributions, and the value of personnel in nonscientific pursuits. The derived resource and opportunity cost measures are presented. This analysis is applied to the United States, suggesting a large increase in costs. In light of these findings, it is concluded that level and mode of support for science must be determined with reference to nonscientific contributions. |
