| Tiivistelmä: | The article discusses the question how the challenges of external innovators influence firm outcomes? An asymmetry created by the location of challenges associated with the focal firm is found: upstream innovation challenges seem to augment the benefits for a technology leader, whereas downstream innovation challenges diminish these benefits. The effectiveness of vertical innovation strategy in managing ecosystem interdependence is proposed to increase during technology life cycle. A framework is developed based on these arguments, which is further supported by an empirical examination of global semiconductor lithography equipment industry. |
