Tiivistelmä:Japan's depressed domestic market has certainly left its financial institutions in need of new assets, which can only be found abroad in any quantity. The Bank of Japan's May Qarterly Bulletin notes that "new borrowing among large corporations continues to be stagnant" and that "large corporations are repaying long-term debt". Lending by the city banks increased by a miserly 0,5% last year, and they have done no better this year. The long-term credit banks and trust banks have fared even worse - in the first quarter of 1994 the former,s loan books rose by just 0.3% and the latter's fell by 2%. Nor are matters better in the capital markets. Total funds raised in the Japanese markets plunged 22.6% during 1992, but recovered somewhat in 1993, with only a 2.8% drop.
