Tiivistelmä:This paper examines the relation between perceived competition and voluntary disclosure in the absence of capital market incentives by investigating private UK companies that have the option to withhold sales and costs of sales information from their publicly-filed accounts. Managers are surveyed about their companies' competitive environments, and archival measures of industry competition are calculated. Managers are found to be more likely to withhold information about sales and costs if they perceive current or potential competition being strong. More profitable companies are also found more likely to withhold information, which is consistent with disclosure being costlier for succesful firms.
