Tiivistelmä:In conventional development literature, small countries are distinguished by their physical size. Countries like The Gambia or Guinea-Bissau are described as facing "small-country problems", i.e. they are unable to sustain themselves. But small doesn't necessarily mean unsustainable. Singapore, by contrast, has one of the highest standards of living in the world. This article argues that geographical or population size are less significant factors in determining viability than social, economic and cultural conditions.
