| Tiivistelmä: | The most countries approach a major historical milestone, they spend years cooking up elaborate plans to decorate the capital with new monuments, fly in foreign dignitaries, and fill the calendar with art exhibits, lectures, and concerts. Just consider the pomp surrounding Hong Kong's handover to China. But India, as its leaders are fond of pointing out, is not like most countries. It wasn't until a few weeks before the 50th anniversary of its independence from Britain that the country's leaders even got around to agreeing on any major commemorations - although, they did end up throwing a pretty good party. |
