| Tiivistelmä: | It would be too optimistic to assert that there are no major problems in the economic development of Latvia, because statistics reveal a dark picture. Foreseen are a lower than expected GDP (only 3,6% instead of the planned 4-6%), a growing current account deficit, an increasingly negative foreign trade balance, and increasing unemployment in 1998. Shocks in the banking system in 1998 demonstrated that Latvian financial business is still rather weak and tied too much with Russia. |
